Have what it takes to do a 5K on the ice?
Don't slip on the frozen Rio Grande River!
When winter works its magic on the landscape, we happily embrace the icy wonderland. Case in point: The Rio Frio Ice Fest in January celebrates all things frost in the southern-Colorado city of Alamosa.
Professional ice carvers produce masterpieces for display on Main Street, an ice carousel entices riders in Blanca Vista Park (a fishing motor rotates a giant disc that’s cut into a frozen pond with chainsaws) and bundled-up runners participate in a 5K on Ice on the frozen surface of the Rio Grande River.
A costume contest, polar plunge, dog sled rides, a Pub n’ Grub tour of local bars and eateries, and finale featuring a 14-foot bonfire round out the schedule. Mark your calendar — the 10th anniversary of the Rio Frio Ice Fest takes place Jan. 25–27, 2019. We can’t wait to see you there.
