S.L.umber Yard at FREIGHT

Settle in at S.L.umber Yard at FREIGHT for a modern cabin escape steeped in Wild West history. You’ll be walking distance from the heart of downtown Leadville, a Victorian-era mining town with dramatic views of the Sawatch Range and easy access to rugged mountain adventures.

At S.L.umber Yard at FREIGHT, unpack your bags in one of the 13 industrial-meets-Western cabins made with recycled wood and metal roofing from the historic Smith Lumber. You’ll love the piping-hot shower, convenient kitchenette stocked with all the basics, Wi-Fi and the ultra-comfy bed that will leave you well-rested for exploration.

What makes it special?

This hotel is brimming with mining-era history, from the fully restored 1884 train depot-turned-wedding venue to the historic photos of Lake County’s mining days in the rooms. Also nodding to its silver boom heyday (when the town bustled with saloons and brothels), each of the cabins are named after one of Leadville’s legendary ladies of the night: larger-than-life characters with the grit and determination to make it in a rough-and-tumble mining settlement.

Most Colorado thing about this place

S.L.umber Yard is super dog friendly. Your pup will have its own dog bed and bowl, and if you let the hotel know your dog’s name before arriving, they’ll leave an extra special treat. (Hint: the rest of Leadville is just as welcoming, too, with dog-friendly patios, a dog park and specialty pet supply shops.)

Our favorite traveler review

“Such a unique and charming place to stay! My boyfriend and I booked a cabin with plans to climb Mount Elbert and the location could not have been better. We were welcomed with complimentary drinks and perfect weather. The cabin had historic information and decor from the city’s past and so many thoughtful touches. We loved the record player and local coffee. Would absolutely recommend a stay here and hope to make it back ourselves!” — Melissa G., Tripadvisor

Things to see & do nearby

Adventurers, this one’s for you. In the summer, conquer two of Colorado’s highest fourteeners, Mount Elbert and Mount Massive. In the winter, shred pow down 64 trails at Ski Cooper or hop in a snowcat for backcountry bliss across 2,600 acres. The 11.6-mile paved Mineral Belt Trail offers year-round non-motorized fun: biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, you name it. After a day of epic thrills, refuel with gourmet pizza piled with creative toppings at the snug High Mountain Pies (feel free to bring your doggo on the pet-friendly patio), and sip a seasonal pint at the country’s highest brewery, Two Mile Brewing Company. For a quick history lesson, glean stories of real-life miners at the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum and then pair local history with spectacular scenery on the Leadville Railroad.
