Phantom Lake Ranch Historic Cabin

Phantom Lake Ranch Historic Cabin

Stay in a refurbished 1800s log cabin that’ll make you feel like a pioneer at heart. It’s nestled on Phantom Lake Ranch in Red Feather Lakes’ northern Colorado Rocky Mountains region.

Built in 1871, this wee cabin was the first permanent residence in Red Feather Lakes. Now it operates as a historical vacation rental on a 600-plus-acre working ranch managed by live-in hosts Madeline and Ryan. The one-story cabin boasts its own water view, and you can trek on private hiking trails to visit the ranch’s jutting rock outcroppings and five peaceful lakes (two of which are stocked for catch-and-release fishing).

What makes it special?

We’re going with all the care the ranch took with renovating the cabin, so it stayed true to its original history while also being comfy and useful for its rotating cast of visitors.

The most “Colorado” thing about this place

It’s Colorado’s bounty of furry and feathered creatures — like zooming hummingbirds clad in iridescent colors, leggy herons, majestic herds of elk and well-antlered moose — that you’ll see when you stay here.

Quirkiest thing to expect

The antique fridge and three-burner stove will send you waaaaay back in time as you cool your craft beers and make your morning cuppa.

Top sensory encounter you’ll experience

There’s no TV here! You’ll love cozying up to the wood-burning fireplace with a nip of after-dinner port (or aperitif of choice) swirling in your glass. The flames will crackle hypnotically as you recount your favorite moments of the day, like sunbathing and grilling on the flagstone patio before motoring over to nearby West Lake for stand-up paddleboarding.

Our favorite traveler review

“This is an amazing opportunity to stay in the oldest cabin in Red Feather Lakes owned by one of the early founding families of the area. The cabin has been restored and maintained to its former glory and has all the modern amenities you could want, but they are embedded and thoughtfully hidden as not to take you out of the rustic cabin experience. You get a real wood-burning fireplace and vintage gas stove to cook on. The bathroom is all floored with flagstone. It’s just a really cool place set centrally at Red Feather Lakes.” — Brandon, airbnb
