Start with an epiphany for a better snowshoe, scribbled on a bar napkin 20 years ago … Fast forward to January 2017, when Crescent Moon introduced its "new kind of snowshoe" made entirely out of foam, and what seemed like a very short period of time turns out to be just enough to change the sport, and maybe the industry, of snowshoeing. That’s what happened at the Outdoor Retailer trade show and the SnowSports Industries America trade show at the start of the year, and now, just a few months later in October 2017, the Eva All-Foam snowshoe is making its way into retail stores across the country.
Crescent Moon Snowshoes was started in Boulder by Tamara Laug and Jake Thamm, who have grown the business from their garage to a "factory" only 3 miles from the famous Pearl Street Mall. In spite of the company's small size, Crescent Moon has been regarded as one of the top snowshoe makers in the world by several publications and organizations.
A life-long runner and outdoorswoman, Tamara attended high school in Carbondale, college at the University of Colorado and received her graduate degree at Denver University, and is the brains and heart of the operation. Her partner and husband, Jake Thamm, is a native Coloradan raised in Grand Junction, and spent most of his youth skiing, mountaineering and being outdoors. The two have nurtured Crescent Moon with all its ups and downs and raised a family at the same time, finding themselves in a place where after making their line of aluminum shoes they’re back to making a groundbreaking product.
It was Tamara — whose second epiphany occurred after a long run in a pair of her favorite trail shoes made by Hoka, with its unique shape and feel — who said, “We need to make our snowshoes feel like this!”
After developing the idea, then the design, and finding partners who could help the couple turn it into a marketable product, the Eva All-Foam snowshoe was a successful Kickstarter project in the summer of 2017 and has since taken them from Colorado to southeastern China and back. Now the company is shipping it across the country and around the world, while continuing to make and assemble its more traditional aluminum line as well.
Where else but Boulder, one of the entrepreneurial hot spots of the Centennial State, would you find a small company started, grown and thriving in this beautiful place at the foot of the Rockies? You can also purchase their snowshoes in stores like REI and Moosejaw, or online at Backcountry.com and Amazon.
